Quote And DOK 4 Reflection
Chapter 1 “Finally she said, “You’ll be safe if you do what we tell you to do. Don’t leave the yard again today.” She seemed very nervous. But then she was often nervous. My mother was always afraid I’d fall off the sea wall, or tumble out of a tree, or cut myself with a pocketknife.” (Pg. 14) I think that these quotes mean that Phillip’s mother is very protective and worried about Phillip 24/7. Reading these sentences I can tell that he cherishes Phillip and wants him to be safe all the time. I can also tell that she really loves him because she thinks about the worst that can happen to him so that he can watch over him as much as possible. Chapter 2 “His voice seemed sad, although he was trying to be cheerful. He told me how wonderful it would be to return to the United States; how many things I had missed while we were on the island. I couldn’t think of one.” (Pg. 25) Phillip is leaving Willemstad and going to USA because his mother doesn’t like living in Willemstad. I can state from my perspective that while Phillip’s dad was saying this and that he was actually sad that his only child is leaving him and because he didn’t mean it when he said that he missed a lot while he was on the island. Phillip knew that his dad was lying, but he also can’t think of one memory that made him want to go to USA. Chapter 3 “Before total darkness, he had skinned them, deftly cutting meat from their sides. He handed me the two largest pieces. “Eat dem,” he ordered. I shook my head. He looked at me in the fading light and said softly, “We will ave’ no other food tonight. You bes’ eat dem, young bahss.” (Pg. 37) Throughout these quotes I can tell that Phillip is uncomfortable with Timothy, but Timothy is making an effort to be close to Phillip. Timothy offered the 2 biggest pieces of fish because they wouldn’t have any food that same day although Timothy is old. Timothy cares about Phillip a lot even if Phillip doesn’t notice. To Timothy Phillip is also before him. Chapter 4 “I screamed to Timothy, I’m blind, I’m blind.” (Pg. 45) I think this quote states that Phillip finally accepts and realizes that he is blind and is scared to death about what is going to happen throughout his life. Chapter 5 “Tell me what’s out there, Timothy,” I said. It was very important to know that now. I wanted to know everything out there.” (Pg. 50) I think these quotes state Phillip is blind so he can’t see what is around his surroundings so he needs Timothy to tell him about everything out in the world. Phillip also sounds very curious, sad, and lonely about what has happened to everything ever since he turned blind. Chapter 6 I said, “I don’t want to go to that island.” I don’t think there was anyone on earth as stubborn as old Timothy. There was steel in his voice when he answered,” We be goin’ on dat islan’, young bahss. Dat be true.” But he knew how I felt now, because he added, “From dis islan’, we will get help. Be true, I swear….” (Pg. 55) In these quotes Phillip doesn’t want to go to that island because there is no one there, but Timothy doesn’t accepts Phillip’s request and they go to the island, but of course Timothy always thinks about Phillip and what’s best for him, so he says that if they go to that island then they will positively get help to sooth Phillip’s mind, feelings, and heart. Chapter 7 “He poured me a half cup of water, saying happily, “Since we ‘ave made lan’, we can celebrate.” I drank it slowly and thoughtfully.” (Pg. 62) In my perspective these quotes are trying to say, since they finally made land that they should celebrate. Timothy gave himself a half cup of water and Phillip a half cup of water and they cherished that moment. Phillip drank the water slowly and thoughtfully for the struggles and conflicts they went through. This was not just a cup of water for him. Chapter 8 “I felt good. I knew how to do something that Timothy couldn’t do. He couldn’t spell. I felt superior to Timothy that day, but I let him play his little fame, pretending not to know that he can really couldn’t spell.” (Pg. 68) I think these sentences state that Timothy doesn’t know how spell and Phillip felt that he was useful and that he can do something that Timothy couldn’t do, but Phillip kept his thoughts to himself because Timothy always does nicer things for Phillip, so he kept this to himself. (Until... Look on the paragraph below) Chapter 9 “I tried again, but it didn’t work. I stood up, threw the palm fibers at him, and screamed, “You ugly black man! I won’t do it! You’re stupid, you can’t even spell.” Timothy’s heavy hand struck my face sharply.” (Pg. 71) I think these sentences state that Phillip was trying to complete something but couldn’t do it and he bursted out by saying mean things to Timothy. Timothy didn’t seem to appreciate Phillip’s rude attitude and as a punishment for the harsh comments he slapped Phillip. Chapter 10 “I noticed more and more that Timothy always changed the subject when we began to talk about my eyes. He would make any kind of excuse.” I think that this means that Phillip is suspecting Timothy that he is lying because he behaves differently when they talk about that subject. Timothy would make up the randomest things just to avoid this type of conversation. Chapter 11 “Slowly, I was beginning to know the island. By myself, keeping my feet in the damp sand, which meant I was very proud of me. From walking over it, and listening to it, I think I knew what our cay looked like.” (Pg. 79) Phillip has been blind for a while now and he is used to it and he is now adventuring the island. Listening to the sounds and feeling places around the island he can think of the view of the cay. Phillip now thinks that he is okay alone. In fact he even went near the ocean where the sharks are and felt the damp sand. Chapter 12 “I helped him to his feet, and we went up the hill together, Timothy leaning on me for support for the first time. He never really regained his strength. (Pg. 92) Timothy has had malaria more than once, but this was Phillip’s first time so he was scared to death. In my opinion, these quotes mean that; when Timothy finally regained conscious he and Phillip climbed back up the hill and Timothy had too lean on Phillip for support and it was the first time ever that he had to lean on Phillip and that’s when Phillip realized that Timothy lost his strength and he never regained it. |
