Don’t you understand?” Phillip’s mother was worrisome when Phillip went to Punda without telling her because she is very protective and is especially more cautious because of the war that is occurring. Parents such as Phillip’s mother would go to the extreme to protect Phillip such as telling him facts that may not even be true. In “The Cay” on page 17, it says, “I guess my mother was homesick for Virginia, where no one talked Dutch, and there was no smell of gas or oil, and there weren’t as many black people around. Phillip’s mother wanted to move because she didn’t like where they lived and the people and by that she means black people, so she told Phillip he shouldn’t hang around black people because they are different compared to them and she thinks that they are bad examples. Phillip was inexperienced with life, so as any other child would he listened and was always rude and disrespectful to the blacks. My Favorite Poem!A Dream Within A Dream by Edgar Allan PoeTake this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow-- You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand-- How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep--while I weep! O God! can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream |
How Does Social Media Impacted My Life The first thing the majority of people in America do in the morning is to check their phones. Social media has become a stronger tool for people around the world to be connected. We can use it for homework, news, entertainment, games, and other apps. Social media has a strong impact in my life and plays a very important role in my growth.
Social media helps me on my academic skills. On social media I can go on my teacher's classroom account for any kind of homework. I can turn in my homework on my teacher’s classroom account on time and if I’m absent I can email my teacher to receive the assignment. I use social media as a daily routine and I always try to do my best with managing the time between homework and videos. Social media has mostly helped me with maintaining my grades. If I wasn’t able to check my grades and missing assignments I wouldn’t know where I stand and I wouldn’t have any motivation to try harder. If I found that my grades were below average, it would motivate me to talk to my teacher and ask if I can find a way to boost my grade. Social media helps me contact my relatives in foreign countries through Korean and Japanese apps. On social media I could go on my phone and call my relatives whenever I missed them. I am only able to call them because my family is the only one that lives in the United States. I use social media every day but on special occasions like New Years, Christmas, or birthdays I would call them. Social media has helped my family to stay connected. Without social media my family and I would not be able call them to see how they are doing. But if we knew that they were fine and healthy, and if there were others who were able to take care of them, then we would not need to worry for them as much. Social media has helped me look at the news on various devices such as; televisions, ipads, computers, laptops, and phones. On social media, I can search up the school website along with the weather in just a few seconds. I use social media every day; in the morning I go on my phone to check the weather so that I can get dressed appropriately for the day. Without social media I wouldn’t be able to know what is going on around me. I wouldn’t know the weather so when it is very cold, I might wear shorts and a short t-shirt. In addition, if there was school and I didn’t know, I would’ve been absent for all my 6 classes. But if social media was always by my side, I wouldn’t have to worry about anything. Social media has helped me become an overall better person. Social media has helped me improve my academic skills. It has also helped me contact my relatives in foreign countries. Lastly, the use of social media through various devices helped me keep up with the news. In conclusion, social media has provided me the ability to make wiser choices in my life. Are Survival Skills An Essential Part Of Growth? Survival skills is the reason to why we humans still exist on Earth! We need to keep teaching each other and learn more of these stupendous skills. Some examples of survival skills are never giving up (perseverance), trusting each other even if you don’t really bond with them, controlling your feelings, learning your own sense of direction, and how to be alone, are the way that we people can survive day after day. Without these amazing qualities in our daily life we wouldn’t last a month or maybe even a week. Maturing is a big step to an adult life and we would need survival skills to help us take those steps.
Perseverance and problem solving are is most important survival skills. Being able to problem solve and work your way around issues is very important in every second of your life. This skill builds creativity and makes you special and who you are, which are important qualities to friendship and mostly anything else in life. Our world is built from blends and balances, and these kinds of differences create a whole new world of possibilities and imagination. In “The Cay,” Phillip never gave up when he was thinking of ways to make the smoke more noticeable. This is an example of perseverance, never giving up! Imagine always giving up and never trying to think of a different approach then your life would not be nearly as meaningful and special, plus you would miss out on new and rare opportunities. Problem solving and perseverance are one of the hardest things that we humans can do, but that can always change in time. Another very important survival skill is controlling your feelings. Most teenagers have a lot of mood swings, and learning how to understand your emotions can be very difficult and uneasy. Understanding and coping with your feelings on your own is an essential part of growing up and becoming a very well-matured man. If you have a bad day, then you need to be able to turn yourself around and make the best of it. In “The Cay,” Phillip feels too many emotions at once such as loneliness, anger, and sadness, and if he had not learned to cope with them, his chance at survival would decrease. Being able to channel your anger is a good skill to have, that way you won’t always blame yourself for every bad thing, you’ll be able calm down, and make wise decisions about how to deal with it. Throughout “The Cay,” there was a time when Philip was furious at Timothy and started to yell at Timothy saying bad, inappropriate, but when Timothy died, Philip was able to control his feelings and continue to survive on the Cay. It is nearly impossible to list all the reasons why survival skills are essential for not only growing up, but for life. Lastly, having a sense of direction is an important life skill, because you will not always be able to rely on technology to get you everything you need. In “The Cay,” Phillip becomes blind and he must learn how to find his way around the island by himself. Having a good sense of direction allows you to navigate/locate even with the daunting challenges by blindness. If Phillip didn’t know where the reef was, he would not have been able to get the food, eventually starving to death and die. If you were lost without any technology, an underlying sense of direction would be necessary in order to survive to find a way back. When Phillip is stranded on the Cay, he must learn how to use his wits in order to survive and find his way around without the help of his parents or friends. Without a basic sense of direction, you can’t travel far from your house without becoming lost! Finding your way around is only one of the many survival skills essential for growing up that you will most definitely need when you grow up. In conclusion, survival skills are essential to learn in the challenge of growing up. Perseverance is what makes us, us, and to be unique. From a very young age, feelings can be difficult to manage and learning how to understand and control them is a whole new level of difficulties. Finally, having a sense of direction is important because if people over rely on technology, when a time comes that technology is not available, the results could be disastrous and with a small possibility there can be some deaths. Without all these survival skills, growing up into becoming a more matured person would be very difficult and you wouldn’t be prepared for the adult life that is waiting for you. |
